What Is The Most Affordable Hardwood Flooring?

Updated: Feb 28, 2023

When you decide to remodel your home, flooring usually takes up a large portion of the budget. However, this no longer has to be the case. There are many inexpensive flooring options available today that will stand out when compared to hardwood flooring. Below, in no particular order, are several flooring options a homeowner can consider while remodeling their home.

Bamboo Floors:

Bamboo is not only beautiful but durable. They have the beauty and strength of hardwood at a fraction of the cost. Installing bamboo flooring involves gluing or nailing to the subfloor. Bamboo is a fast-growing plant available in vast quantities, so it’s a rapidly renewable resource.

Carpet Squares:

Carpet squares are one of the easiest floor coverings to install and one of the least expensive. You lay the squares on the floor using adhesive strips. The various colors, patterns, and designs available make options unlimited. They are great for odd-shaped spaces since you can easily cut and arrange the pieces as needed.

Cork Floors:

Cork is an excellent eco-friendly option; it is a natural, renewable product that’s easy to install. Beautiful, quiet, and easy to care for, its durability is unmatched compared to other flooring materials. Cork is naturally resistant to mold, mildew, and termites.

Concrete:

Concrete is a versatile flooring option because it can be used in modern designs and a rustic farmhouse. With concrete flooring, you don’t have to worry about things like high heels, pet claws, or furniture legs damaging its surface because it’s just nearly impossible. Concrete flooring requires minimum maintenance.

Laminate Floors:

Laminate is one of the least expensive choices for residential flooring. Laminate floors are designed to snap into place using interlocking tongues and grooves, making installation quick and easy. For inexpensive flooring ideas, laminate is a good choice for people who are tough on floors, so if you have children and pets, it’s an intelligent choice.

Plywood Planks:

Once only reserved for subfloors, plywood is starting to be introduced as an affordable flooring alternative. You can either remove the existing flooring and refinish the plywood subfloor beneath or install new plywood on top of an existing subfloor. The plywood can be cut into planks or any creative design you choose.

Porcelain Tiles:

Porcelain is a great option. These tiles are available in a variety of colors and are incredibly durable. They are hard, dense, and solid, making them resistant to most heavy stresses. Even if you don’t have any tile experience, you can tile a small room on the weekend.

Refinishing Your Existing Floors:

You will have to decipher whether a floor only needs a new coat of polyurethane or if it needs to be completely refinished. If the damage to the floor is more extensive, then it may need to be sanded and have a new application of stain and topcoat.

Sheet Vinyl:

For an inexpensive and straightforward floor option, vinyl sheeting may be your best bet. You will need a template of the floor size and shape. Sheet vinyl can be laid over old linoleum or vinyl flooring if the existing floor is good.

Vinyl Plank Floors:

These are not like your grandmother’s peel and stick. Peel and stick vinyl tiles have a wide range of styles and are one of the least expensive flooring options. This flooring is virtually indestructible, is often waterproof, and is easier to install than most other flooring materials.
